Career

I got my business license in 1989 freelanced primarily with a few stints as a typesetter, ad designer and in-house designer. I currently play the part of Art Director at Rick Steves' Europe. This started out as a part-time position that would possibly allow me to continue freelancing, but has blossomed into a department that requires at least two of us. After succumbing to the allure of a paycheck and realizing that there's nothing more likely to suck the creativity right out of one's soul than to come home from a day of work to do more work, I decided to give up the freelancing ghost for good. I have other pursuits in mind these days (see below).

Inspiration

When I arrived in Seattle to go to college several years ago, I was immediately taken with the posters covering phone poles across the city. It was one of the many reasons I wanted join a band — so I could make posters for our shows and saturate the city with them. I did, eventually. I continued on that path, designing posters for other bands along the way. I look back fondly on those nights I'd travel with backpack and trusty staple hammer, thwacking onto weathered wooden poles the latest 11 x 17 performance advertisement for our band, though I'm not sure I was too crazy about it at the time (and it was a rather foolish thing to do alone).

Rock

I've been at the rock here and there with a shiny band that gives me those creative outlets I had back when I used to cut my own hair and wear clothes found in Dumpsters. I continue my strange little polygamous dance between design and music, not fully devoting myself to either and never leaving one behind.
